GRANT GUIDELINES
The St. John’s Legacy Foundation (SJLF) was created in 2020 by the St. John’s Housing Society (SJHS), a not-for-profit organization that provides affordable housing for seniors in the City of Edmonton. On December 30, 2020 received its Certificate of Incorporation from the Government of Alberta. On January 3, 2023 the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) granted the SJLF charity charitable status based on the information it gave in its application and on the purposes in its governing document of January 3, 2023, issued under the Societies Act of Alberta.
Vision
The St. John’s Legacy Foundation shall be a not-for-profit foundation that will inspire and enhance community development in the Ukrainian Orthodox community in Edmonton and the Western Eparchy.
Mission
Through its charitable efforts, the St. John’s Legacy Foundation shall support and fund worthwhile projects within the Ukrainian Orthodox community that will enhance and promote the spirit of unity among Canadian Ukrainians.
Objectives
To advance religion and education, and to advance the public appreciation of the arts, by providing funding for projects that focus on the Ukrainian Orthodox faith, and Ukrainian language and culture in Canada.
To receive and maintain a fund or funds and to apply all or part of the principal and income therefrom, from time to time, to qualified donees as defined by the subsection 149.1(1) of the income tax Act (Canada)
Project assessment Criteria
- Overall Assessment
Does the proposed project educate, commemorate, or assist the Alberta Parishes in the UOCC Western Eparchy in meeting their needs?
- Project Quality
SJLF looks for evidence of quality through the commitment, clarity, and soundness of proposed project plans.
- Financial Responsibility
SJLF will consider the soundness, coherence, and clarity of the governance of the project through such factors as sound financial planning and other sources of funding
- Community Support
The SJLF will consider broader support for the application through support letters from individuals and other organizations
Conditions of Assistance
- After ascertaining that the request meets the criteria, support for the approved project may be provided form the funds available. The mount of support will be based on the availability of funds and the merits of the project.
- All projects must begin within one year of application deadline.
- Since most projects cannot be fully funded, applications may be awarded only partial funds if any at all.
- Detailed budget information must be included with the application.
- Upon completion of the project, a final written and financial report must be filled with the SJLF.
- The decisions of the Board for the SJLF is final.
Application Procedure
- Applications for financial support must be made on the application form of the SJLF found on its website (www.sjlegacyfoundation.com). Provide as much information as possible on the application form itself and add pages, as necessary.
- Applicants who have previously received funding form the Foundation and whose projects are unfinished at the time of the new application must report on the status of the project in question.
- Any application which is not complete will not be considered.
Application Deadline
- Applications must be in the office of the SJLF by the deadline of April 1st.
- The SJLF board will acknowledge receipt of each grant application.
- Once a decision on the application has been made the Board of the SJLF, applicants will be notified within six (6) months.
Report Requirements
- Recipients must file a financial statement and a final report upon the completion of the project. Failure to do so will disqualify the applicant from any further funding from the SJLF.
Acknowledgement
- The recipient will acknowledge the grant received form the SJLF with the following statement:
“This project has been made possible by a grant from the St. John’s Legacy Foundation.” - The recipient is encouraged to use our logo along with the acknowledgement. Logo/Brand Acknowledgements Resource
